My big toe is swollen and the nail isn't growing. why?

My big, right toe has been swollen for about a month and half (possibly from wearing a certain shoe that caused it), and my toe nail on that toe hasn't been growing ever since. I have two questions:

Could this be serious if not treated?

and how do I stop the swelling? My big toe is swollen and the nail isn't growing. why?
change shoes and see a docMy big toe is swollen and the nail isn't growing. why?
there are several things that this could be.it could be irratation from shoes or a ingrown toenail or a infection under the nail.i would try solking it in hot water then pouring peroxide on it for several days but then if still no better seek a doctor who may perscribe a antibiotic cream or something of that nature.this could lead to a seriose problem if it is infection since infection untreated will spread.
It could be an ingrown toe nail, and it could be infected...Go check it out..u may need to have the doc help the nail out and maybe put u on some anti-inflammatories or antibiotics..
did you drop something on it

could get serious if left unattended as it will get infected
