Why do we have finger/toe nails?

Pre-evolution we will have needed claw like ends to our digits to help us tear meat from flesh, get into fruit and nuts etc. It strengthens our digits and will have also been used as one of our defenses when attacking predators. Predators, as in the other animals trying to eat us, not the 80's Arnie film ';I aint got time to bleed!';Why do we have finger/toe nails?
To stop your hands and feet fraying at the endsWhy do we have finger/toe nails?
To stop your fingers %26amp; toes fraying!
We have toe and finger nails only to protect the tips of these sensitive parts of the body. They offer a protection barrier against all kinds of things and the ends of our fingers would be a mess without them.
1, so we can paint them and make them look pretty

2, to scratch (if we need to)

and 3, cause dont you think we'd look odd without them
