What is it when your dog bites its toe nails?

it depends on how often/much your dog does this. if it's just part of their daily routine, like a few minutes at a time once or twice a day, or just after a walk, that's probably just grooming, and it's fine and healthy.

If they are really going to town, nibbling like crazy, it could be a couple things. Your dog could be bored. He may need more exercise or mental stimulation. This behavior can become obsessive and unhealthy, so if it's really excessive consider more playtime.

Your dog could have a hot spot. this is a round spot that will not have fur on it. It will probably be red or pink. Mine had one between his toes and was really fretting over it. They can become infected, so it's important to distract them from the spot until it has a chance to heal. you can redirect their attention to play, put Bitter Yuk or another bad-tasting product on it, just saying a firm ';No!'; sometimes works, or you may need an e-collar.

And of course he could have fleas.

First thing you need to do is make a vet appointment. Have the clinic check for mites, or any other medical reasons for the biting of the nails. If there isn't any medical reason for this then it may just be one of two things: one he is filing his nails or two he is bored, get him some chews or toys to play with or chew on instead. This will be better for his teeth, his nails, and probably the headache the sound of gnawing gives you! What is it when your dog bites its toe nails?
My b*tch does this too. Never seen it before in any other dog I've had through here.

There are no mites and no problems, she just trims her already short tidy nails herself. I never have to cut them. Most odd.

She'll stick her back foot in her mouth and you can hear her chewing her nails. She is defiitely not licking her feet or inbetween the toes, she just seems to skim the tops off carefully.

Funny.
mine does it too... it could be mites or fleas around his toes. ive watched mine %26amp; she actually chews on her feet, not really on her nails... is he doing this too? try a flea bath paying close attention to his feet %26amp; if that doesnt work ask a vet. ive heard of them doing it just because theyre bored too but that was just hearsay so dont quote me on it.. :P hope this helps a little?
They are cleaning their feet. There is probably dirt or someting in between them.
They're trimming or sharpening them. It's probably instinct.
It is their instinct, a part of the grooming process.
not sure... more info would help...

could they need rimmed?

ask the vet.
its feet itch of he/she could have mites between its toes or grass a seed
