What is the use of figner or toe nails?

besides using it for painting and accessorizing. i checked on google and its says to protect out nerve ending but there are some people with really tiny nails an don't fully cover to the tip of their fingersWhat is the use of figner or toe nails?
You can use finger nails to open soda cans and pick things up easily.





To me, toe nails don't have a practical use, but seriously, protecting nerve endings is pretty important.What is the use of figner or toe nails?
I notice that most people who have really short nails are the ones that bite or pick at their nails.
